Patriots’ videotaping catches NFL’s eyes (Sports)
The New England Patriots have long built what is considered to be one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history. How they obtained this supreme reign is now under strict investigation after they were busted last week for having a team employee videotape the New York Jets coaches signaling their defensive plays to players. According to many other NFL teams this comes as no surprise as they have always thought the Patriots had an unfair advantage and in some games would know exactly what plays were going to be run. Almost all NFL coaches will use the naked eye to attempt to ‘steal’ the play calling of their opponents, however league rules specifically ban the use of video equipment to obtain this edge.
In my opinion, this issue should receive more attention then any baseball player was given regarding steroid use. A player taking steroids is just one link in the chain of a sports organization. The videotaping by the Patriots was done by a franchise involving over 100 members. It would be foolish to say that the players and all of their coaches had no idea this illegal activity was going on. MLB players are suspended when they test positive for performance enhancing drugs and I think the Patriots should be punished in just the same way. Obviously the Patriots did not use any type of steroid but they did, however, use performance enhancing equipment to gain that competitive and illegal edge on their opponents. In my opinion, the Patriots should not be allowed to participate in the playoffs and should potentially be forced to fire members of their coaching staff, including head coach Bill Belichick.
